BORA cooktop helps create a stylish cooking paradise in Scotland’s capital
As part of a complete renovation, a town house in Edinburgh formerly used for commercial purposes has been transformed in to a lovingly furnished home, complete with a BORA Basic cooktop in the luxurious kitchen.
Designed by interior design studio Peden & Pringle, the extraordinary kitchen-cum-living room features a centrally positioned kitchen island that follows the outer lines of the room.
As designer Adam Peden explains: “The curved end of the island mirrors the curvature of the wall and ceiling. It is also precisely lined up with the middle of the tall external window, while the other side has been positioned right in the centre of the glazed internal wall.”
In the middle of this kitchen island, dividing it in two, is the BORA cooktop, which has been fitted into the worktop directly opposite a marble fireplace, a protected feature of the room under the building’s listed status. Similarly, the ornamental stucco ceiling could also not be modified, making a conventional extractor hood suspended from above unsuitable.
“As the client also wanted an extractor with a downdraft function, the BORA cooktop was the obvious choice”, explains Adam Peden. The cooktop extractor in the BORA Basic system chosen effectively extracts the cooking vapours and odours downwards, releasing them outside via a duct system. As such, the new kitchen in the historic building has been brought into the 21st century both visually and technically. The space where people used to work is now used to cook and live in style.

About the company:
Since 2007, BORA Lüftungstechnik GmbH, headquartered in Raubling, Upper Bavaria, has successfully developed and sold cooktop extractor systems that draw vapours downwards thanks to the use of patented technology. The innovative BORA Professional, BORA Classic, BORA X Pure, BORA Pure and BORA Basic product ranges are sold in 60 countries worldwide.
BORA founder Willi Bruckbauer has a vision: the end of the extractor hood. The patent he developed has multiple advantages: the premium-quality systems are more effective than conventional hoods, extremely quiet, energy efficient and easy to clean. They enable maximum design freedom for kitchens and a clear view.
The company received its first award within the scope of the innovation contest “365 Orte im Land der Ideen” (365 Places in the Land of Ideas) back in 2009, followed by the German Entrepreneurs’ Award, red dot awards, Plus X Awards, German Design Awards, Iconic Award, German Brand Award, Good Design Awards, iF Design Awards and others.
