Cleaning BORA filters: here’s how

In your kitchen, BORA appliances not only ensure perfect cooking results but also fresh, clean air. Whether in cooktop extractor systems, the BORA X BO steam oven or the BORA refrigeration systems, integrated high-performance filters ensure optimum air quality and hygiene. So that these filters work efficiently, regular cleaning is a must.

Cleaning BORA filters: the basics

So that your BORA cooktop extractor system works perfectly, a clean filter is essential, as is the case on the BORA X BO steam oven and BORA refrigerators too. So that you can benefit from top performance at all times, it is important to clean the filter regularly. There are two different kinds of filters: the grease filter and the activated charcoal filter. The latter is only installed in BORA recirculation cooktop extractor systems, the BORA X BO and BORA refrigerators. All BORA cooktop extractor systems have a grease filter, regardless of whether they are a recirculation or exhaust air model.

You should regularly clean the housing that the filter is installed in, as well as the stainless steel grease filter on your cooktop extractor system.

Changing BORA activated charcoal filters

As well as the grease filter, BORA cooktops with an integrated recirculation extractor system also have an activated charcoal filter. The BORA X BO steam oven and the BORA Cool and BORA Cool Combi refrigeration systems are also equipped with an activated charcoal filter. This binds odour molecules. Once its absorption capacity has been reached, odours can no longer be filtered and the cooktop extractor performance wanes. If you notice that odours are starting to build up, it’s time to change the filter. Your BORA system will also show you when the filter has reached the end of its service life and the activated charcoal filter needs to be changed. The instructions for changing the BORA X BO filters are in the maintenance menu. The filter must be replaced after around 150 operating hours or once a year. In the case of our refrigerators, once a year you will receive a message in the display telling you to change the filter.

Contrary to the grease filter on the cooktop extractor systems, which you can simply put in the dishwasher, an activated charcoal filter cannot be cleaned. It needs to be replaced when it can no longer absorb odours. Order your replacement filter from the BORA online shop.

Maintenance & cleaning tips

How often the grease filter and cooktop extractor systems, steam oven or BORA refrigerators need cleaning, depends on how much the appliances are used. If you cook a lot of greasy food, the parts will need cleaning more often. The following are tried-and-tested cleaning and maintenance cycles:

  • Cooktop extractor (exterior):
    clean weekly.

  • Cooktop extractor (interior):
clean after cooking very greasy dishes but at least once a week.

  • Cover flap, grease filter, filter tray (on the Professional):
clean after cooking very greasy dishes but at least once a week.
Maintenance tray (on the Professional): clean as required (in recirculation mode, when replacing the activated charcoal filter at the latest).

  • Air inlet nozzle and stainless steel filter:
clean after cooking very greasy dishes but at least once a week or if the letter F flashes on the fan power level indicator; always clean stainless steel surfaces in the direction of the grain.

  • Air guiding housing:
clean every six months or when replacing the activated charcoal filter.

  • Activated charcoal filter (recirculation only):
replace if odours build up, extractor power wanes or the fan level display shows F.

  • BORA X BO:
clean once or twice a month depending on your cooking habits.

  • BORA refrigerators:
clean every 4 weeks to guarantee optimum hygiene. The cleaning function deactivates the door alarm so that you have enough time for cleaning.

FAQs on how to clean the cooktop extractor and filter

How often should the filters be cleaned?

The grease filter should be cleaned at least once a week and after cooking greasy food.

Yes, the stainless steel grease filter and other removable parts of the BORA cooktop extractors can be cleaned in the dishwasher. Depending on the system, these include the air inlet nozzle, cover flap, grease filter tray and maintenance tray.

The grease filter fitted in all BORA cooktop extractors can be cleaned. Recirculation cooktop extractors also have an activated charcoal filter which cannot be cleaned and must be replaced regularly.

No. Our activated charcoal filters cannot be cleaned – neither in the dishwasher nor by hand. If the activated charcoal is no longer absorbing unpleasant odours, the filter must be changed.
