Do you love glitz and glamour in your home and want to enjoy an elegant atmosphere in your kitchen? An Art Deco-style kitchen is a real eye-catcher that’s sure to impress. The style is reminiscent of the 1920s; in other words, Art Deco cuisine features luxurious elements and floral details. A contemporary Art Deco kitchen combines antique pieces and vintage elements with innovative technology. How do you design a kitchen like this? What materials and colors are typical? Get inspired!

Art Deco – Art Nouveau 2.0

Art Deco was inspired by Art Nouveau influences. The style is also characterized by several typical Art Nouveau elements: Furniture, decor, architecture, fashion, and everyday objects feature decorative, curved lines and floral motifs. At the same time, there are also straight, minimalist forms. Art Deco was seen as a further development of the style, incorporating modern elements. The movement reached its peak in the 1920s. Art Deco kitchens reflect the spirit of the "Roaring Twenties."

Typical characteristics of the Art Deco style

Opulence and luxury, a lavish lifestyle, and bold fashion: Many people associate the 1920s with these characteristics. Many of these elements remain highly sought-after today and can be found in interior design and architectural examples. These features define the design of Art Deco-style kitchens:

    • Ornamental details on furniture and accessories (vine and floral motifs)

    • Straight-lined, geometric designs

    • Golden accents, e.g., on handles, lighting fixtures, or decorative items

This style is also evident in interior design: The walls are adorned with patterned wallpaper featuring gold accents or floral designs. Home textiles made of soft velvet or delicately shimmering silk, as well as decorative items such as vases or gilded statues, complete the look.

      Colors and Materials

Elegance is the hallmark of Art Deco kitchens. The same applies to the color palette. This style pairs well with combinations of velvety black, gold, and rich hues such as violet, midnight blue, and emerald green. Soft shades like rosé or a gentle jade green are just as popular. When paired with certain materials, this creates a glamorous look:

      • Dark woods accentuate the elegant aesthetic.

      • Natural stones such as marble add a touch of luxury.

      • Glass doors on cabinets or display cases add a touch of elegance.

      • Chrome or brass finishes exude modern luxury.

How to Design Your Kitchen in the Art Deco Style

In an Art Deco kitchen, the motto is: More is more. Eye-catching decor, glossy surfaces, or opulent chandeliers arranged with style above a kitchen island give the room a unique character. Looking for examples?

      • A black kitchen with a modern, clean-lined design is an ideal foundation for an Art Deco-style kitchen. A feature wall with floral motifs in bold colors like purple and teal makes for a great focal point. Golden lamps, vases adorned with peacock feathers, and antique-style fixtures complete the look.

      • White and gold make a striking combination in the Art Deco style. This white kitchen with high-gloss cabinet fronts, striking gold handles, and a marble countertop becomes a real eye-catcher.

Tip: An Art Deco kitchen thrives on variety. Especially in large kitchen-dining rooms and open-concept layouts, an antique or vintage piece of furniture can harmoniously complement the style. This can be achieved, for example, with a sideboard featuring typical Art Deco or Art Nouveau elements. Another eye-catching feature is a dining table with a understated design, complemented by Viennese wicker chairs or retro club chairs.

        Integrating technology seamlessly

Historic style, modern technology: In an Art Deco-style kitchen , appliances blend in seamlessly—if you use a few clever tricks:

        • Choose retro-style refrigerators or simply install your preferred models as built-in units

        • Hide small appliances like kettles and toasters behind cabinet doors, or choose models in gold, white, or black —to match the look of your Art Deco kitchen.
        • A sink that matches the color of the countertop blends in so well it's almost invisible. Alternatively, you could choose not to include a draining area. Here's how to seamlessly integrate the basin into the overall design.

Tip: Round shapes have a particularly harmonious effect.
