Do you love glitz and glamour in your home and want to enjoy an elegant atmosphere in your kitchen? An Art Deco-style kitchen is a real eye-catcher that’s sure to impress. The style is reminiscent of the 1920s; in other words, Art Deco cuisine features luxurious elements and floral details. A contemporary Art Deco kitchen combines antique pieces and vintage elements with innovative technology. How do you design a kitchen like this? What materials and colors are typical? Get inspired!

Art Deco – Art Nouveau 2.0

Art Deco was inspired by Art Nouveau influences. The style is also characterized by several typical Art Nouveau elements: Furniture, decor, architecture, fashion, and everyday objects feature decorative, curved lines and floral motifs. At the same time, there are also straight, minimalist forms. Art Deco was seen as a further development of the style, incorporating modern elements. The movement reached its peak in the 1920s. Art Deco kitchens reflect the spirit of the "Roaring Twenties."

Typical characteristics of the Art Deco style

Opulence and luxury, a lavish lifestyle, and bold fashion: Many people associate the 1920s with these characteristics. Many of these elements remain highly sought-after today and can be found in interior design and architectural examples. These features define the design of Art Deco-style kitchens:

    • Ornamental details on furniture and accessories (vine and floral motifs)

    • Straight-lined, geometric designs

    • Golden accents, e.g., on handles, lighting fixtures, or decorative items

This style is also evident in interior design: The walls are adorned with patterned wallpaper featuring gold accents or floral designs. Home textiles made of soft velvet or delicately shimmering silk, as well as decorative items such as vases or gilded statues, complete the look.

      Colors and Materials

Elegance is the trump card in the Art Deco kitchen. This also applies to the colour palette. The style harmonises with combinations of velvety black, gold and bold tones such as violet, midnight blue and emerald green. Delicate shades such as rosé or a soft jade green are also tried and tested. In combination with certain materials, you can create a glamorous look:

      • Dark woods emphasise the elegant aesthetics.

      • Natural stones such as marble add a luxurious touch.

      • Glass doors on cupboards or display cabinets create shiny accents.

      • Chrome or brass surfaces ensure modern luxury.

How to Design Your Kitchen in the Art Deco Style

In an art deco kitchen, this is the motto: More is more. Eye-catching decorations, shiny surfaces or opulent chandeliers arranged stylishly above a kitchen island lend the room a unique character. Looking for examples?

      • A black kitchen with a modern, linear design is an optimal basis for an Art Deco-style kitchen. A back panel with floral motifs in intense colours such as violet and petrol is a great eye-catcher. Golden lamps, vases with peacock feathers and antique-look fittings complete the picture.

      • White and gold form a strong team in the Art Deco style. A white kitchen with high-gloss fronts, eye-catching golden handles and a marble worktop is a real eye-catcher.

      • Some kitchen islands in a room in the style of the Roaring 20s also experience golden times. Kitchen islands in gold add extravagance. Geometric patterns on the panelling enhance the effect. The kitchen splashback and one or two accessories may also stand out as a complement.

Tip: An Art Deco kitchen thrives on variety. Especially in large kitchen-dining rooms and open-concept layouts, an antique or vintage piece of furniture can harmoniously complement the style. This can be achieved, for example, with a sideboard featuring typical Art Deco or Art Nouveau elements. Another eye-catching feature is a dining table with a understated design, complemented by Viennese wicker chairs or retro club chairs.

        Integrating technology seamlessly

Historic style, modern technology: Electrical appliances blend harmoniously into a kitchen with an art deco look - if you use a few tricks:

        • Opt for refrigeration units with a retro look or simply integrate your favourite models as built-in versions

        • Conceal small appliances such as kettles and toasters behind cupboard doors or opt for variants in the colours gold, white or black - to match the look of your Art Deco kitchen.
        • A sink that matches the color of the countertop blends in so well it's almost invisible. Alternatively, you could choose not to include a draining area. Here's how to seamlessly integrate the basin into the overall design.

Tip: Round shapes have a particularly harmonious effect.
