Do you love glitz and glamour in your home and want to enjoy a sophisticated ambience in your kitchen? An Art Deco-style kitchen is a real eye-catcher with a wow effect. The style is reminiscent of the 1920s, i.e. the Art Deco kitchen plays with luxurious individual items and floral details. A contemporary Art Deco kitchen combines antique pieces and vintage elements with innovative technology. How do you design a kitchen like this? Which materials and colours are typical? Get inspired!

Art Deco - Art Nouveau 2.0

Art Deco was inspired by Art Nouveau influences. The style is also characterised by some typical Art Nouveau elements: Furniture, decoration, architecture, fashion and everyday objects feature decorative, curved lines and floral ornaments. At the same time, straightforward, purist shapes can also be found. Art Deco saw itself as a further development of the style with modern elements. The movement reached its peak in the 1920s. Art Deco kitchens reflect the zeitgeist of the "Roaring 20s".

Typical features of the Art Deco style

Opulence and luxury, an extravagant lifestyle and bold fashion: Many people associate these attributes with the 1920s. Many elements are still in demand today and can be found in interior design and architectural examples. These features characterise the design of kitchens in the Art Deco style:

    • Decorations on furniture and accessories (tendril and floral motifs)

    • straightforward, geometric designs

    • gold accents, e.g. on handles, lights or decorations

The style is also evident in the interior design: The walls are adorned with motif wallpaper with golden details or floral patterns. Home textiles made of soft velvet or delicately shimmering silk as well as decorative elements such as vases or gilded statues round off the overall look.

      Colours and materials

Elegance is the trump card in the Art Deco kitchen. This also applies to the colour palette. The style harmonises with combinations of velvety black, gold and bold tones such as violet, midnight blue and emerald green. Delicate shades such as rosé or a soft jade green are also tried and tested. In combination with certain materials, you can create a glamorous look:

      • Dark woods emphasise the elegant aesthetics.

      • Natural stones such as marble add a luxurious touch.

      • Glass doors on cupboards or display cabinets create shiny accents.

      • Chrome or brass surfaces ensure modern luxury.

How to design your kitchen in Art Deco style

In an art deco kitchen, this is the motto: More is more. Eye-catching decorations, shiny surfaces or opulent chandeliers arranged stylishly above a kitchen island lend the room a unique character. Looking for examples?

      • A black kitchen with a modern, linear design is an optimal basis for an Art Deco-style kitchen. A back panel with floral motifs in intense colours such as violet and petrol is a great eye-catcher. Golden lamps, vases with peacock feathers and antique-look fittings complete the picture.

      • White and gold form a strong team in the Art Deco style. A white kitchen with high-gloss fronts, eye-catching golden handles and a marble worktop is a real eye-catcher.

      • Some kitchen islands in a room in the style of the Roaring 20s also experience golden times. Kitchen islands in gold add extravagance. Geometric patterns on the panelling enhance the effect. The kitchen splashback and one or two accessories may also stand out as a complement.

Tip: Art deco cuisine thrives on variety. An antique or vintage piece of furniture can harmoniously complement the style, especially in large eat-in kitchens and open-plan concepts. This can be achieved, for example, with a sideboard with typical Art Deco or Art Nouveau elements. A dining table with a restrained design also catches the eye, complemented by chairs in Viennese wicker or retro club chairs.

        Skilfully integrate technology

Historic style, modern technology: Electrical appliances blend harmoniously into a kitchen with an art deco look - if you use a few tricks:

        • Opt for refrigeration units with a retro look or simply integrate your favourite models as built-in versions

        • Conceal small appliances such as kettles and toasters behind cupboard doors or opt for variants in the colours gold, white or black - to match the look of your Art Deco kitchen.
        • A sink in the same colour as the worktop makes itself almost invisible. Alternatively, it is possible to dispense with a draining area. This allows you to integrate the basin seamlessly into the overall picture.

Tip: Round shapes look particularly harmonious.
