Where is the kitchen? If you own a cleverly planned pantry kitchen, you can play hide and seek: The ultra-compact line can be cleverly concealed, finds its place even in the smallest of spaces and combines all the appliances and cupboards you need for your cooking projects. We reveal all about the hidden potential of the mini kitchen.

What is a galley kitchen?

By definition, a pantry kitchen is a fitted unit that combines all basic functions in a very small space. It usually measures between around 90 and 160 centimetres in width and is equipped with cupboards, drawers and the most important appliances. A pantry kitchen is usually equipped with a fridge, hob, sink and tap and often a (mini) oven. Depending on the version, dishwashers and microwaves can be integrated.

The importance of a pantry kitchen is demonstrated not least by its space-saving design: It fits into nooks and crannies, can be cleverly concealed if required and offers everything you need for your cooking: innovative appliances, storage space and a well thought-out design.

Pantry kitchens - the mini kitchens for universal use

Do you live in a small space and want to make clever use of every centimetre of space? Are you looking for a space-saving cooking option in your holiday home? Or would you like to enjoy occasional dinners in your second home? Mini pantry kitchens are not only the first choice in these cases.

  • In the open-plan living and cooking area, a mini-kitchen saves valuable space - for a spacious sofa or a large dining table, for example - while still offering everything you need for cooking.

  • Pantry kitchens with appliances are perfect as a second installation, for example for the growing children, in the guest house or near the garden for preparing barbecues.

  • The Minis camouflage themselves masterfully behind partitions, room dividers or curtains. Do you enjoy cooking, but would prefer to conceal your kitchen visually? Mini pantry kitchens can simply disappear when needed.

Tips for planning: Appliances and storage space in a small area

Little space, high demands on equipment - this is exactly where the galley kitchen comes into its own. With thoughtful planning, the mini kitchen becomes a fully-fledged cooking area:

    • Select a suitable installation location. Single kitchens also require electricity and water connections, which may need to be planned before installation.

    • Measure the available space exactly and adjust the kitchen dimensions accordingly to make optimum use of every millimetre.

    • Utilise the height. High wall units or floor-to-ceiling built-in cupboards are ideal. They create additional storage space and make the kitchen look calmer.

    • Rely on electrical appliances with a compact design. Galley kitchens often have hobs with two zones, integrated table-top dishwashers and combination appliances such as ovens with microwave and steam cooking functions.
    • Create more order with clever solutions. You can keep knives and cooking utensils within easy reach on hooks and magnetic strips. Spices and other items find a safe and stylish place in closed boxes.

    • Do without a wall bonnet in favour of storage options. The integrated cooktop extractor systems from BORA absorb steam where it is generated: directly on the cooktop. This saves valuable space.

Good to know: Sockets and small appliances such as the kitchen or coffee machine can be cleverly concealed in the single kitchen - for example in lifts or lifting columns on the worktop. If necessary, they move the lift upwards at the touch of a button. This keeps the worktop tidy at all times.

Stylewunder pantry kitchen - ideas for fronts and worktops

Airy and bright or cosy and glamorous: The design of a pantry kitchen ideally blends seamlessly into your living space. The choice of colour and surface design influences the effect of your compact kitchen:

      • Light-coloured fronts make the kitchen area appear larger. In front of a light-coloured wall, a mini pantry kitchen also recedes visually into the background.

      • Dark colours set the scene for the compact kitchen unit and provide targeted accents. With thoughtful lighting - such as recessed lights for the work area and a decorative pendant light - a harmonious overall look is created.

In the smallest hut: How to integrate the mini kitchen

Whether as an eye-catcher or a functional kitchenette: A pantry kitchen with appliances can be integrated in a variety of ways into different living concepts - provided that water and electricity connections are available. Looking for ideas?

      • Deliberately set the scene for designer pantry kitchens - for example with matt fronts, concrete looks or an eye-catching colour. Place the line in a prominent position in the room and turn it into a design statement.

      • Complete the single kitchen: The space-saving solution can be flexibly extended. If you have enough space available, complete the pantry kitchen with wall shelves and open shelving. Ceiling-high cupboards create additional storage space without taking up valuable floor space.

      • For maximum restraint, the storage space and kitchen unit can be concealed behind ceiling-high, handleless wall panels. When closed, they look like a normal wall. When the kitchen is in use, the panels can often be folded up and stowed in a niche or pushed aside. Folding doors or sliding elements that open upwards are also available.

Tip: In such "secret kitchens", the hob is often not hidden in the cupboard of the pantry kitchen, but is located on a separate island. For good reason: So you can cook in a convivial atmosphere - and a cooking island offers plenty of room for handling.
