Granite in the kitchen is a dream for many people: The material is very stable, scratch-resistant, heat-resistant, durable and easy to clean - and its look is unique: It is a natural stone and therefore each surface has its own individual character. Granite worktops are particularly popular in kitchens. Which granite kitchen suits your style and what is important when choosing? We'll tell you.

Granite in kitchens: Typical properties of natural stone

Why are granite worktops a good choice for kitchens? The answer is clear: Granite rightly enjoys an excellent reputation as a material for kitchen worktops. Stone is formed in the earth's crust by the slow cooling of magma and is one of the hardest materials - and not just for kitchens. This is what characterises granite:

  • Thanks to a high quartz content, granite worktops and elements are extremely hard and stable

  • The surface is scratch and impact resistant and repels liquids.

  • Thanks to the smooth texture, dirt, bacteria and germs cannot find a foothold. This simplifies cleaning.

  • Granite worktops can withstand high heat. You can place hot pots and pans on the surface for a short time with peace of mind.

Their characteristic properties make granite kitchens very durable: They are practically a purchase for eternity.

Good to know: Granite is a natural stone, like marble and slate, which are also popular in kitchens.

Granite worktops for kitchens: Colours at a glance

Granite impresses with its faceted look. The surface can have numerous different colours, impacts and grains. These are the most popular variants

    • a velvety black, often with glittering speckles

    • a strong anthracite

    • red, brown and pink tones

    • light to dark blue, sometimes with golden or grey speckles

    • sand-coloured to white granite

Design tips: Which granite worktop suits which kitchen style?

Which shades you choose depends primarily on the colour of your kitchen, but also on the desired room effect. Are you looking for ideas on how to make your kitchen an eye-catcher with granite?

      • The classics include black granite, which often shines with light-reflecting speckles. For example, it serves as a visual resting pole in colourful kitchens or underlines the glamorous look of a black high-gloss kitchen.

      • Sand-coloured granite worktops harmonise perfectly with kitchens made of real wood. The result is a harmonious look with a warm undertone.

      • Brown and red highlights create a lively atmosphere. The nuances really come into their own in a black kitchen, and you can create an extravagant twist with a reddish-brown granite worktop in a kitchen in a strong Bordeaux colour.

      • white granite is also popular in the kitchen: The light colour reflects the light and gives rooms width and freshness. The effect is particularly effective with light-coloured fronts. White also creates strong contrasts - for example with a black, matt kitchen.

Tip: Match the design of the hob and sink to your granite kitchen and create a harmonious overall look as if from a single mould. Sinks made of light-coloured ceramic are the perfect accompaniment to white granite. Black worktops form a harmonious duo with a hob set into the surface.

Surfaces and structures of granite worktops in the kitchen

Granite allows various surface finishes, which have a decisive influence on the look and feel of a granite worktop in the kitchen.

      • A polish creates an ultra-smooth, shiny surface. It reflects the light perfectly and metallic splashes are shown to their best advantage.

      • Polished granite surfaces have a silky matt effect, absorb light reflections and harmonise perfectly with matt black kitchens.

      • Brushing ensures a natural look and feel. The gently roughened material brings out the best in the grains and textures. At the same time, brushed granite remains easy to clean in the kitchen.

A clean affair: cleaning the granite worktop in the kitchen

Are granite worktops sensitive? How do stains form on the stone? These are questions that many people ask themselves when they want to invest in a granite worktop in the kitchen. Here are the answers:

        • In principle, granite kitchen worktops are very robust and easy to clean. Warm water, a little mild soap and a soft sponge are usually enough.

        • However, caution is advised when handling acidic foods. Vinegar, lemon juice and the like penetrate the material and can leave permanent stains.

        • Care should also be taken when handling oils and greases. Remove such stains as soon as possible.

Good to know: Regular impregnation protects the material from stains and keeps it shiny for longer. Aging granite kitchen worktops can be sanded, polished or brushed again.
