Rough, untreated fronts in soft light grey or strong anthracite, a robust industrial look and timeless chic: Concrete kitchens exude a special charm. Kitchen fronts with a concrete look are visually appealing, offer practical benefits and fit into almost any room design. We reveal how you can make concrete look great in the kitchen.

Concrete kitchens - the aesthetic style

Kitchen design with unusual materials is on trend - and concrete kitchens enjoy a particularly large community of enthusiasts. The concrete material is robust, stable and has a timeless, purist look. The matt, rough surface of the kitchen fronts gives the room a loft-like, urban character.

With high-contrast accessories and material mixes, such as wood or glass, as well as a well thought-out lighting concept , you can give your concrete kitchen a unique look.

Tip: Combine bright task lighting and indirect lighting, for example in the form of spotlights under the wall units, to set the scene in your concrete kitchen. The matt hobs from BORA blend seamlessly into a concrete kitchen.

Concrete look or real concrete: the little surface guide

Do you prefer a concrete look in the kitchen or do you go for real concrete? The decision has consequences, because real concrete is susceptible to signs of wear - but this is not a disadvantage, on the contrary. Over time, a patina develops that makes your concrete kitchen unique.

Kitchen fronts in concrete lookare usually made of plastic or ceramic , thelook of concrete is recreated using a special process. Visually, they are almost indistinguishable from the real thing. There are also mixed forms in which the manufacturers apply a thin concrete layer to a substrate . This allows you to benefit from the properties and appearance of the material as well as a moderate weight compared to solid concrete.

The advantages and disadvantages of concrete worktops

A concrete worktop offers numerous advantages:

    • It can be produced from a single mould and therefore seamlessly, even in XL formats.

    • The material is very resilient and durable.

    • The patina effect makes worktops made of real concrete unique.

    • The cool look can be perfectly combined with many kitchen accessories, splashbacks and floor designs.

Where there is light, there is also shadow - and so concrete worktops in the kitchen also have disadvantages:

    • They react sensitively to acids.

    • The surface should be impregnated regularly to protect it from stains.

    • The heavy weight can make delivery and installation a challenge.

    • Concrete worktops are comparatively expensive.

Good to know: Are you wondering whether concrete kitchens are generally more expensive? Not necessarily. Cabinets with kitchen fronts in concrete-optics are comparable in price to other surfaces. Variants made of real concrete, on the other hand, are among the more high-priced versions.

To avoid marks on the concrete worktop, we recommend sealing:

    • Epoxy resin hardens the surface and withstands high loads.

    • Polyurethane makes concrete worktops resistant to moisture, abrasion, grease and oil.

    • Special furniture waxes and oils close the pores of the concrete material and thus prevent the penetration of liquids.

Tip: An impregnation with oil and wax should be refreshed abouttwice a year.

Playing with colours, materials and textures

The typical grey shade is available in many design patterns and can be perfectly combined: For example, concrete and wood harmonise with each other in the kitchen, in the form of accessories or in the floor design. The warm wood tone of parquet or floorboards and the cool concrete look create an aesthetic contrast.

Which floor also suits a concrete kitchen?

      • You can create a minimalist look with an industrial touch with a floor made of polished screed or exposed concrete: The look of the floor harmonises perfectly with the kitchen fronts.

      • Slate-look tiles go perfectly with a concrete kitchen in grey tones. Light-coloured fronts create a harmonious contrast, while dark-coloured fronts ensure a seamless look.

      • Mediterranean tiles in terracotta tones or atmospheric mosaics break through the industrial character, bringing warmth and a charming retro touch to your kitchen.

Important: Real concrete kitchens are heavy. Therefore, check the load-bearing capacity of the floorbefore installation.

Planning small, medium-sized and large concrete kitchens

A concrete kitchen fits into small, medium-sized and large rooms alike. What factors need to be considered when planningin order to make a mini room with a concrete look appear more spacious?

        Small concrete kitchen
        • Light colours create visual space.
        • Handleless fronts create a minimalist, uncluttered look.
        • Open shelves instead of wall units bring lightness into the room.
        Medium-sized concrete kitchen
        • Cabinets as high as the ceiling make optimum use of the available space.
        • Full-extension runners create efficient space and allow convenient access.
        • Material mixes create attractive accents, for example in the form of wall units with wooden or frosted glass elements.
        Large concrete kitchen
        • A concrete kitchen island structures the room.
        • A uniform design of fronts, rear wall and worktop emphasises the monolithic effect of a kitchen made of concrete in grey.
        • Open shelves and glass elements provide visual variety.
