Effective odor removal: The range hood's activated carbon filter in detail

In a modern kitchen, where cooking and living spaces blend seamlessly, air quality is crucial to well-being. While the grease filter attracts the grease molecules contained in the cooking fumes, the activated carbon filter in the range hood traps the odor molecules. In recirculating systems, it is the main kitchen odor filter, ensuring that the smells of fish, onions, or fried foods stay where they belong: in the pot.

Definition: What is an activated carbon filter in range hoods?

An activated carbon filter is a highly specialized filter medium used in recirculating range hoods to adsorb gaseous odor-causing substances from cooking fumes. Unlike an exhaust ventilation system, which vents air outside, this filter cleans the air so thoroughly that it can be recirculated directly into the living space as odor-free fresh air.

The key difference: Activated Carbon Filter vs. Grease Filter

To ensure the longevity of your range hood system, two filter systems work together:

    • The stainless steel grease filter: It acts as the first line of defense, mechanically filtering heavy grease particles out of the cooking fumes. This filter is reusable and can be easily cleaned in the dishwasher.
    • The activated carbon filter (odor filter): It is the court of second instance. Since grease would clog the fine pores of the activated carbon, it is located behind the grease filter. Its function is to bind odors at the molecular level that the grease filter cannot trap. Unlike the grease filter, this filter cannot be reused and must be replaced with a new odor filter at regular intervals.

The Benefits of Activated Carbon Filters for Odor Removal

Using a high-quality activated carbon filter for your range hood offers tangible benefits for your home:

      1. Outstanding adsorption capacity: Thanks to its highly porous structure, activated carbon has an enormous internal surface area. One gram of activated carbon can cover an area the size of two soccer fields—enough space to permanently bind even the most potent odor molecules.

      2. Fresh air without heat loss: Since no warm indoor air is blown outside, your home’s energy efficiency is maintained (especially in passive houses).

      3. Versatile use: Not only in the cooktop extractor, but also in the BORA X BO steam oven, a special odor filter ensures that no odors escape into the surrounding area when the door is opened.

The effectiveness of odor removal using BORA technology

The effectiveness of our kitchen odor filters depends on the quality of the activated carbon used and the amount of time cooking fumes come into contact with the filter media. BORA takes it a step further:

“We use high-quality activated carbon filters (such as the BORA eSwap) to effectively trap odor molecules and achieve a clean rate of nearly 100%.” With models such as the BORA Basic and the BORA Pure family, we further enhance this effect: "An integrated anti-fish coating reliably traps even strong odors and particles." – BORA Engineering Expert

BORA Fact: A fully functional BORA odor filter neutralizes virtually all odor molecules. To ensure this feature works properly over the long term, it is essential to change the filter on time—a reminder that your system intuitively displays via the user interface.

Smart odor filtration: Usage and Service Life of BORA Systems

In every BORA recirculating system and in the BORA X BO steam oven, the exhaust air activated carbon filter is at the heart of the air purification system. To ensure that this kitchen odor filter can achieve its full adsorption capacity, it is perfectly tailored to the airflow dynamics of the specific appliance. Unlike conventional range hoods, where the filter is often well hidden, the integration of the BORA system is part of a holistic operating concept.

BORA Filter Types and Their Service Life

To maintain consistently high air quality, our filter systems operate on a precise replacement schedule. Since activated carbon permanently binds odor molecules, it eventually becomes saturated. BORA uses a variety of technologies to optimize service life:

            • BORA Basic & Pure Series (Pure, X Pure, S Pure, M Pure): This system uses highly efficient filters that can be easily replaced from above through the access opening—without having to remove any base panels or drawers.

            • BORA Professional & Classic: These systems often use larger filter units in the base cabinet to ensure maximum odor elimination over long periods of time, even during intense cooking.

            • BORA X BO: The built-in activated carbon filter ensures that the odors produced during steam cooking are neutralized before they can escape into the room when the door is opened.

Important for planning: A BORA odor filter is designed to operate at full capacity for between 150 and 600 hours (depending on the model and cooking habits). Since it is physically impossible to clean saturated activated carbon, only replacing it in a timely manner will ensure the freshness of your living space.

System-based security: When is it time to replace the filter?

So you don't have to rely on your gut feeling, your BORA system intelligently monitors the service life of the odor filters in the kitchen in the background. As soon as the capacity is exhausted, the intuitive display will notify you:

              • "F" (Filter) indicator: Appears on the display of the BORA Pure, BORA Basic, and BORA Professional models.

              • "i FILT"/"E FILT" display: The BORA Classic 2.0 system provides two advance warnings (when there are 20 and 5 hours of remaining runtime) so you can order a replacement in time.

How to dispose of old BORA activated charcoal filters and order a replacement

To ensure that your BORA odor filter continues to provide top-quality air purification, it should be replaced regularly as indicated by the system display. You can find detailed step-by-step instructions and helpful videos for performing the replacement yourself in our BORA Service Area.

Disposing of used BORA odor filters is easy. Since the filters do not contain any harmful substances, you can simply dispose of them in the regular trash.

FAQs about BORA activated charcoal filters

Recirculation models of our BORA cooktop extractor systems and our BORA X BO steam ovens are equipped with a BORA activated charcoal filter. It is essential in these products as otherwise odours would be released (back) into the room.

The BORA activated charcoal filter can be accessed through a cover flap. On the BORA Basic compact systems and in the BORA Pure range, the activated charcoal filter is in the centre of the cooktop beneath the air inlet opening.

No. Activated charcoal filters cannot be cleaned. When the filter service life is up, they must be changed.

For BORA Basic systems with the BORA activated charcoal filter set (BAKFS) and BORA Pure systems with BORA Pure activated charcoal filters (PUAKF, GFES or GFESP), replacement is necessary every 150 operating hours. For BORA Pure systems, you can choose between the activated charcoal odour filter (GFES) and activated charcoal odour filter Plus (GFESP) filter types. These differ in terms of filter performance, among other things.

With our Classic and Professional systems, you have two options: the flexible BORA air purification box (ULBF) must be replaced after 300 operating hours, while the BORA air purification box with three activated carbon cartridges (ULB3X) must be replaced after 600 hours.

The X BO odour filter (XBOGF) in the BORA X BO steam oven lasts for 150 hours.
