New original BORA odour filters for ‘fresh air’

09.2025

BORA stands for fresh air in the kitchen. When developing its cooktop extractor systems, the pioneer in ventilation technology pays particular attention to the filter technology inside. In addition to the sensible placement of grease and odour filters, the quality of these two filter elements is crucial for the air quality achieved – and thus makes all the difference when cooking every day. To mark the launch of the new cooktops from the BORA Pure family, BORA is introducing a new, more powerful generation of activated charcoal filters and supporting the company's central theme of “fresh air” with comprehensive communication.

The secret to permanently fresh air
Many end users are familiar with this: an extraction system – such as an extractor hood or downdraft fan – ensures fresh air when cooking. It draws in contaminated air with cooking and frying odours, filters it through the activated charcoal filter and releases it back into the kitchen environment in recirculation mode. (The exhaust air variant, on the other hand, releases the air into the outside area through the wall box.)

A grease filter located in front of the odour filter traps grease particles from cooking fumes, e.g. from steak in the pan, so that they do not block the fine pores in the odour filter. This creates a visible film of grease, ensuring everyone at home knows that the grease filter needs to be cleaned regularly in the dishwasher.

Installed deep inside the system, the odour filter operates inconspicuously: with activated charcoal granulate, it reliably binds the odour molecules from cooking fumes in its fine-pored structure. Here, it is the user's handling that determines whether the air quality remains excellent long term – and thus actually unnoticed. Only those who replace this filter regularly can avoid slowly becoming accustomed to the unpleasant cooking odours that become stronger again when the filter is saturated.

Patented filter replacement in seconds: it is easy to change the filter through the inlet opening of the BORA Pure cooktop extractor systems. The new BORA odour filters, distinguished by their blue handle, ensure permanently fresh air when cooking.

Cooktop extractor & new BORA filters: design and content make all the difference
With the aim of achieving the best possible air quality throughout the entire recommended service life, BORA has developed new odour filters. These are already included in the scope of delivery of the facelifted compact BORA Pure cooktop extractor systems. The appliances for cabinet widths of 60 to 90 cm impress with their sophisticated ventilation technology: The design of the appliance is crucial, because in addition to the greatest possible distance between the grease filter and the activated charcoal filter, the developers also list the length of time the air remains in the odour filter due to the slowest possible flow as a relevant factor. The longer the air remains in the filter, the more odours are bound.
Fact: Odour filtration depends on surface. The larger the inner surface area of the fleece-coated activated charcoal, the more effectively odours can be filtered from the air. This is where the expertise of BORA ventilation technology really comes into its own: thanks to optimal airflow, the air passes evenly across the entire width of the filter and does not come into contact with just a small part of the filter. This means that the entire inner surface area is used to bind odour molecules.
Practical for users: All BORA Pure cooktop extractor systems automatically remind users to change the filter after 150 hours of use. Depending on cooking habits, this corresponds to more than a year of service life, during which the air filter results are consistently optimal.

Not all filters are created equal
What many end customers do not know is that not every filter eliminates unpleasant fish odours, for example. BORA odour filters use a special anti-fish component for this purpose. On closer inspection, this can be seen as small, light-coloured beads on one side of the filter. For effective air filtration, BORA odour filters also have an extra-large filter area of 4,500 cm², which allows for longer dwell times and, thanks to its sensible placement in the appliance, does not become clogged with grease particles but is instead used completely by the air flow. Here, the fine-pored structure of the entire activated carbon granulate is fully utilised for complete odour filtration. This explains the long service life of BORA activated charcoal filters, which is 150 hours. With intensive cooking, this corresponds to a filter replacement interval of approximately one year and is automatically indicated on BORA Pure appliances with an F (for filter) on the display.eSwap is a really clever way to change the filter. It is BORA's patented method of rolling up the flexible filter into a spiral shape and pushing it through the inlet opening into the filter channel. This provides much more filter surface area without taking up any space on the glass ceramic hob.

Fresh air as a topic of knowledge
The launch of BORA odour filters is the ideal time to communicate the benefit of ‘fresh air in the kitchen living space’. As one of the company's key themes, it is ideal for informing end customers. BORA therefore communicates this message via digital channels, on its own website and in BORA Magazine, which is available free of charge from more than 8,000 international BORA kitchen retail partners. At the same time, BORA's press work picks up on this knowledge topic by placing it in German-language daily newspapers and advertising journals in addition to international special interest magazines in the fields of architecture, design & interior and food & lifestyle.

Fresh air subscription
BORA filters for recirculation cooktop extractor systems from the BORA Pure family are available from local kitchen retailers and the BORA online shop. They can be identified by the designation “BORA eSwap activated charcoal odour filter” and the blue handle band. The order designation PUAKF (short for: Pure activated carbon filter), originally defined by BORA, has been used by many Asian manufacturers for less efficient filter products and is therefore no longer a quality criterion.
If you want to make things easy for yourself, choose the subscription model in the BORA online shop and have the filter sent to you automatically at an interval of your choice with a discount of around 20%.
