Old kitchen, fresh look: If your kitchen is getting on in years, you don't necessarily need a new one.

Your kitchen can be modernised cost-effectively with creative ideas and targeted measures. Find out how you can create a completely new look by renovating fronts, worktops and walls.

The most important facts in brief:

Individual modernisation: a kitchen refresh to add a new touch, or a complete overhaul to redesign your living space.

Targeted component replacement: replacing fronts, worktops or lighting enhances both the look and functionality.

Technological upgrade: A BORA cooktop extractor system improves energy efficiency and eliminates the need for a traditional extractor hood.

Effective cost control: DIY like protective film reduces costs, while specialist retailers provide durable, professional equipment and high performance.

What kitchen renovation options are there?

Depending on your budget and structural requirements, you can choose between two approaches to realise your modernisation:

  • The complete conversion: This includes the complete dismantling of the old kitchen and the replacement of floors and walls. The entire kitchen layout is often rethought in order to create more freedom of movement and ergonomics.

  • The kitchen refresh: The basic substance is retained here. By replacing individual elements such as fronts, the worktop or new lighting, you can achieve an aesthetic and high-quality effect with simple solutions.

Modernisation is preceded by careful planning: Think about what you want to refresh in advance:

  • Fronts: can be replaced, painted or laminated.

  • Handles: provide a fresh look in no time at all.

  • Rear walls and tiled splashbacks: could do with a new coat of paint or a stylish film.

  • Modern electrical appliances: often offer functions for greater safety and convenience when cooking.

  • Lighting: makes a room look different immediately.

  • Worktop: has a strong visual effect. Important: Measure the existing cut-outs exactly.

Tip: A kitchen renovation is also an opportunity to rearrange appliances. In this case, check the existing connections and observe the magic kitchen triangle when repositioning.

Tips & inspiration for your new dream kitchen

For a harmonious overall concept, you should coordinate the details of your planning precisely. Use our guides for more in-depth insights into the professional design of your living space:

    • Worktops & materials: The choice of surface defines the aesthetics and durability of your kitchen. When making your choice, pay attention not only to the design, but also to the heat resistance and easy-care properties of the materials. Find out more about the advantages and disadvantages in our guide to kitchen worktop materials
    • Maximum performance in a small space: Even a mini kitchen can make a big impression with intelligent planning and compact appliances. By using an integrated cooktop extractor, you save valuable space in the wall unit that would otherwise be lost to an extractor bonnet.

    • Lighting concept for more atmosphere: Professional kitchen lighting is more than just a light source; it creates safety when cutting and sets architectural highlights. Combine direct task lighting with indirect ambient lighting to create a room that is both functional and lively.

Renovate your kitchen: The costs at a glance

A look at the costs shows whether a kitchen renovation is worthwhile: In most cases, yes - especially if you're revamping the kitchen yourself.

      • Depending on the material, worktops cost between around 10 euros (plywood with decor) and 1,000 euros (Dekton) per metre.

      • New kitchen fronts cost around 80 to 500 euros per square metre.

      • Prices for kitchen splashbacks range from 50 euros (wood and stainless steel) to 500 euros (glass and acrylic).

      • A tiled splashback costs between 20 and 200 euros per square metre.

Why does it make sense to replace kitchen appliances when renovating?

New electrical appliances not only save energy, they also maximise convenience and cooking enjoyment:

        • For complete conversion: If the appliances are already older, we strongly recommend replacing them in order to benefit from the functions, convenience and energy efficiency of modern innovations such as the BORA cooktop extractor.

        • For worktop replacement: Use this moment to realise new dimensions and flush-mounted installations. A downdraft system creates a clear view and eliminates the conventional extractor bonnet.

Tip: If you buy a new worktop, this is also an opportunity to replace the stainless steel sink with ceramic.

Renovate your kitchen: Perfecting walls, floors and co.

If you're modernising on your own and want to keep costs to a minimum, you can achieve a lot with a new wall colour and a new floor.

          • Match the wall colour to the colour of the fronts for an elegant look.

          • Pre-finished parquet, vinyl and laminate can be laid on the existing floor in many cases.

          • Floor tiles can also be painted instead of being replaced.
FAQ on the topic of kitchen renovation

Foil wrapping is relatively simple, usually requires little effort and opens up creative design possibilities. Painting requires a little more effort, but usually lasts longer.

Natural stone worktops can be expensive, as can high-quality solid wood cabinets. However, top-quality materials will generally give you many years of enjoyment.

Your discarded kitchen may still be in demand on the second-hand market. Alternatively, you can donate it or invest in professional disposal.

Want to renovate your kitchen and save money? You can do just that with a paintbrush and some paint: kitchen fronts, wall and floor tiles can be freshened up with special paints. Back walls can be given a new look with film.

If you only want to apply foil to the fronts, the time required is manageable. A complete renovation can take several weeks.

How often you should renovate your old kitchen depends, among other things, on the quality of the kitchen cabinets and fronts, how often you use them, and your personal preferences. High-quality furniture and worktops can last ten years or more. Sometimes it is worth replacing electrical appliances earlier due to new functions and more efficient technology.
