Patagonia quartzite in Bolzano

The kitchen island crafted out of patagonia quartzite is clearly the star of the show in this kitchen located in an historic building in the heart of Bolzano. Its variety of colours is mirrored in the interior design, and the BORA Professional 3.0 blends in perfectly with the overall concept.

Colourful yet subtle

The patagonia quartzite that was sculpted into a cooking island in this South Tyrolean kitchen is like a map. Its striking patterns recount the rich diversity and ruggedness of faraway countries. This eye-catching stone was also used for the splashback.

“We chose this stone because it’s a real showstopper in any setting. As with cooking, where different ingredients can create an extraordinary dish, this quartz amazes us with its diversity”, enthuse the natural stone specialists at Antolini based in Verona. Not only is it attractive to look at, it is also easy to clean and extremely robust. The colour scheme for the rest of the kitchen is subdued – after all such a dominant jewel calls for an understated (in this case matt-black) accompaniment.

Patagonia quartzite is made up of three different minerals: feldspar, white crystal and black tourmaline. The stone’s impressive array of colours is skilfully reflected in the interior of the apartment that was renovated in 2022. The dark upholstered furniture is a nod to the tourmaline, whereas golden accents can be found on the lamp stand or the wall-mounted mirror frames. It’s hard to imagine that such a modern interior lies behind the old building façade, surrounded by trees and mountains.

An interplay of light

This Bolzano-based kitchen is a perfect example of what can be achieved with good lighting: the sophisticated lighting concept is made up of three aspects: on the one hand, natural light shines upon the kitchen counter from skylights in the sloping roof. On the other hand, the indirect lighting of the LED strips affixed to the bottom edge of the kitchen island and various individual light fixtures create a cosy atmosphere. The translucency of the white crystal is also very special. When lit form behind it creates a unique effect and bathes the solid natural-stone block in a golden glow.

Cooking brings people together

In addition to the aesthetic aspect, functionality also played a key role when planning this kitchen. One of the clients’ main wishes was to be able to accommodate and entertain groups of people and friends. The kitchen island is the focal point as it allows the clients to interact with their guests even while cooking, despite the crooked room layout. The kitchen island can be used on all four sides.

For example, while the host is cooking on the All Black version of the BORA Professional 3.0, guests can make themselves comfortable at the other end of the island. The owners opted for the BORA cooktop system because it ensures a clear view, fresh air and a low noise level as well as leaving plenty of room for bar stools for relaxing and having breakfast. This kitchen is modern yet timeless thanks to the use of top-quality materials and appliances.
