Open and expansive – a kitchen overlooking the water

Open and expansive – a kitchen overlooking the water

The owners of a property in south-west England have fulfilled their dream of eating breakfast every day with a view of the turquoise blue sea. Constructing the walnut breakfast bar was a real challenge, but it now blends in perfectly with the overall look of this ultra-modern kitchen.

Beige sand, turquoise sea, modern kitchen

The town of Poole, with its unique natural harbour surrounded by long sandy beaches, is nestled on the southern coast of England in the county of Dorset. No wonder that the kitchen-living-dining area of this glorious kitchen with its built-in BORA cooktop extractor system opens out onto the sea.

The extra-large windows not only allow plenty of sunlight to flood in, they also offer a staggering view of the turquoise water while cooking and eating. The owners of this ultra-modern kitchen can therefore watch the action on the water while drinking their morning coffee or enjoy leisurely evenings with guests on the adjoining terrace.

The colour scheme of the kitchen and sofa, etc. is understated so that it doesn’t upstage the magnificent scenery which surrounds the designer house. The beige aluminium wall panels are a nod to the long sandbanks that Poole is famous for, and they bathe the room in a golden shimmer depending on the light incidence.

Two kitchens, two functions

In addition to all the generosity and other advantages that an open living-dining-cooking area has to offer, keeping it clean can be a real challenge especially when entertaining guests on a regular basis as the owners of this kitchen love to do. Therefore, together with the kitchen designers from Hobson’s Choice, the owners came up with a layout that perfectly meets their needs.

Next to their presentation kitchen with its wow factor they have another kitchen that they use for preparing meals, which is separated from the living area by a sliding door. That way, they can hide everything that they don’t want to be seen and make the most of the beautiful view.

The presentation kitchen certainly doesn’t feature an extractor hood that gets in the way of the clear view. Instead, Pieter du Toit from Hobson’s Choice suggested installing a BORA X Pure – an absolute game changer in this kitchen, not only thanks to the innovative way in which it draws vapours downwards, but also due to the special design of its air inlet nozzle, which blends seamlessly into the sophisticated kitchen ensemble.

The kitchen island as a centrepiece

The BORA X Pure is installed in the middle of the large, dark-coloured kitchen island. This was essential for these Hobson’s Choice clients, as it naturally brings people together. United around this large granite block, the hosts and their guests can cook, laugh and enjoy pre-dinner drinks and nibbles with a view overlooking the English Channel.

The pattern of the ‘Tropical Storm’ granite used for the worktop is a work of art in itself that knows how to capture attention despite the spectacular view. Its beige colour refers to the sand outdoors and the wall panels indoors and runs like a river along the otherwise black worktop.

Constructing the cantilevered breakfast bar was a real challenge. It is made from a walnut wood, a completely different material from the kitchen island, and is mounted upon it in such a way that no attachments hinder the legroom. Combined with four simple stainless steel stools, the tabletop offers enough space for everyday meals and unforgettable parties.
